Una condanna in appello a 6 anni per violenza sessuale, e pochi giorni dopo in campo in Serie B, come capitano della sua squadra. Lui si chiama Manolo Portanova, a giugno compirà 26 anni, e da quasi cinque è sotto process per uno group rape ai danni di una studentessa. Si è sempre professato innocente, e il suo avvocato ha già annunciato un ricorso in Cassazione, ma nel frattempo continua a giocare con la Reggiana: la cui dirigenza e i tifosi emiliani sono esplicitamente schierati dalla sua parte.
The case dates back to the night of 30-31 May 2021, when Portanova allegedly abused the girl, then 21 years old, along with three other people: his younger brother William (a minor at the time of the events), his uncle Alessio Langella, and a friend, Alessandro Cappiello. The girl and Portanova had started dating a couple of weeks prior, and that evening they had met at a party in Siena: they had gone into a room privately, and subsequently the other three men joined them. According to the girl, the group sexual encounter that followed was not consensual on her part, and so she filed a complaint against the four.
The case didn't gain much attention until December 2022, when Portanova was sentenced to six years in prison in the first instance. At that point, his team at the time, Genoa, stopped calling him up for matches and the following month, during the winter transfer window, they tried to sell him to Bari. However, the transfer fell through due to a protest by the Puglian fans, so Portanova remained on the fringes of the squad until the end of the season. In the summer, he was sought after by Reggiana, who secured him on a two-year loan, and then formalised his permanent acquisition in the summer of 2025.
Nonostante la condanna in primo grado, Portanova ha giocato regolarmente in Serie B in questi anni con il club emiliano, di cui di recente è anche diventato capitano. Il suo ingaggio ha creato polemiche a livello Politician, a Reggio Emilia, ma all’interno del mondo sportivo il calciatore ha trovato un ambiente a lui decisamente favorevole. Nel luglio del 2023, dopo il suo arrivo, gli ultras del gruppo Teste Quadre They made a banner during a friendly which said, “In life as in the stadium… up to the third degree, no one is condemned”. The following October, the club president, Carmelo Salerno, reiterated its support for Portanova, justifying himself like this“The role models for young people should be parents, family, the Pope, not footballers.”.
Questo caso ha messo in luce un cortocircuito nel sistema del calcio italiano e sollevato delle perplessità sulle iniziative in occasione della Giornata internazionale contro la violenza sulle donne che si tengono ogni anno a fine novembre. Nelle ultime stagioni, Portanova è sempre stato in campo in queste occasioni con il segno rosso sul volto, simbolo della campagna, sebbene già condannato in primo grado. Era di nuovo in campo domenica 19 aprile 2026, con la fascia da capitano al braccio, appena tre giorni dopo la conferma in appello della condanna a sei anni, e ha giocato anche lo scorso 1° maggio in occasione del derby con la Reggiana. Le attiviste di Not One Less Modena hanno, in quella circostanza, affisso uno striscione per contestarlo che è stato rimosso da alcuni tifosi dopo neanche due ore. Hanno inoltre raccontato di essersi opposte alla rimozione e di aver ricevuto in cambio insulti sessisti, minacce e atti osceni.
Football institutions are not taking a stance
Fin dalla sentenza di primo grado, la Procura generale dello sport ha cercato di ottenerne la squalifica, ma il caso si è chiuso il 13 marzo 2024, quando la Corte d’Appello della FIGC (la Federcalcio italiana) He suspended judgement on the player, pending the final verdict of the criminal trial.
Almost five years after the events, Portanova has in the meantime appeared to assert his innocence on Rete 4, during the programme Fourth Grade from 15 April 2023, accompanied by his father Daniele (himself a former professional footballer) and his own lawyer. After the appellate court ruling, Daniele Portanova gave an interview exclusively to the well-known broadcaster Sportitalia, reiterating his son's innocence. Then, on April 20th, the accused's father also posted on Instagram of the complainant's private message screenshots, in which intimate details entirely irrelevant to the proceedings are revealed.

Da un punto di vista strettamente legale, è perfettamente legittimo che Portanova continui a giocare, non avendo ancora ricevuto una condanna definitiva. Il suo caso, però, non può non mettere in crisi la serietà con cui il calcio italiano affronta la tematica della Gender-based violence: in prima fila quando c’è da partecipare a iniziative di carattere assolutamente generale, ma incapace poi di tradurre questi principi nel concreto.
Anything but an isolated case
In the league fixtures on 25 November 2024, dedicated specifically to the fight against violence against women, four players with first-instance convictions for rape took to the field. Besides Portanova, Michael Liguori of Padua (3 anni e 4 mesi), Gianni Manfrin della Virtus Verona e Santiago Visentin del Cerignola (entrambi a 6 anni). In più, avevano giocato pure Carmine Cretella del Padova, all’epoca sotto processo e poi condannato a due anni, e Demba Seck del Catanzaro, in prestito dal Turin. Il caso di quest’ultimo è tra i meno discussi, eppure tra i più preoccupanti: denunciato per revenge porn, si è salvato perché il pm incaricato del caso, Enzo Bucarelli, ha depistato le indagini (in quanto tifoso del Torino, club per cui giocava Seck all’epoca) e ha poi convinto la vittima a ritirare le accuse in cambio di un risarcimento. Seck non ha quindi subito alcun processo, mentre Bucarelli he was recently convicted in appeal to 1 year and 9 months.
Quello di Manolo Portanova non è dunque un caso eccezionale, ma solamente la punta dell’iceberg. Proprio questo mese sono stati rinviati a giudizio tre ex giocatori del Bra, accusati di aver violentato una ragazza dopo la festa per la promozione in Serie C della squadra, nell’estate del 2025. Tutti i giocatori citati fin qui stanno continuando a giocare regolarmente, tranne due: Manfrin è stato condannato in Cassazione, assieme agli altri suoi colleghi imputati, nell’ottobre del 2025, e si trova dunque in carcere. Tra di essi c’era anche Santiago Visentin, contemporaneamente sotto processo a Belluno per un altro stupro di gruppo, ma il difensore italo-argentino ha lasciato l’Italia prima della sentenza definitiva, e risulta attualmente latitante.
The problem is that Visentin's situation is not entirely new. At the beginning of 2022, the well-known Brazilian footballer Robinho was sentenced by the Cassation Court to 9 years for a sexual assault committed in Milan in 2013, when he was playing for AC Milan. In the meantime, however, the striker had moved abroad, and at the time of the final sentence, he was in Brazil, a country that does not allow the extradition of its citizens. Only in March 2024 was Robinho, more than two years after his conviction, arrested in Brazil, where he is now serving his sentence.
